The Early Days
Since 1990, grass-root volunteers have been active partners with local municipalities, agencies, groups and individuals in creating safe, scenic, historic and recreational non-motorized transportation corridors in the Salida area. Early trail projects were developed by the Salida Trail System Committee that helped create the Monarch Spur Rail Trail along the valley floor which forms the backbone of the 10.5 mile system.
In 2000 these volunteers formed Salida-area Parks, Open-space & Trails (SPOT) a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to promote the creation, preservation, improvement and appreciation of parks, open space and trails in the greater Salida area. SPOT assists municipalities, groups and individuals to plan, write grants and implement projects in Chaffee County, which include public park amenities and improvements, historical preservation, open-space acquisition and trails systems.
Our First Projects
Early SPOT projects included enhancing Alpine Park with playground equipment, creating Monarch Spur Park, the Poncha Springs Disc Golf Course, planning and building an in-town trail system in and around Salida, and developing a Chaffee County Trails Master Plan. SPOT continues to assist in projects that help promote outdoor recreation and environmental education and appreciation.
For over a decade, SPOT has worked with the Hutchinson family to preserve and restore the Hutchinson Homestead, an intact group of pioneer ranching buildings from 1873, in order to create a ranching heritage museum and learning center. The final restoration was completed in 2013 and the Hutchinson Homestead Ranch & Learning Center is opening the summer of 2013. The Friends of the Hutchinson Homestead are a Chapter of SPOT.
In August 2013 SMT gained its own non-profit status and is now operating independently as a 501©3. SPOT looks forward to our continuing partnership with SMT as we plan and build a trail system that connects throughout Chaffee County and beyond.
